Landscapes
My work is contemplative, reflecting everyday wonder, the connection of the physical and the metaphysical, and the coexistence of simplicity and complexity in life. I paint landscapes using oils in a combination of direct and indirect techniques. Deceptively naïve at first glance, these paintings reward close examination.
I draw color sketches on site, using them as points of departure in the studio. Focusing on elemental compositions and vitality in color, I apply layers of paint. Glazing and scumbling give the paintings a depth that the simplified shapes belie. The refinement of the process contrasts with the drawing, creating dreamlike images.
Many of the landscapes hover between abstraction and representation. Bridging contradictions and encompassing paradox, the work doesn’t fit neatly in any category. Expressionist hybrids, these paintings are often quiet and subtle, developed slowly, using elements of an Old Master technique.
